It is no surprise now to race fans that Western North Dakota will be seeing a new class of cars tearing up the tracks this year. It probably is also no surprise to those who know me that I am very excited to see how this new class holds up in their first year of racing as I am a huge fan of sprint cars. 2020 will mark the inaugural racing season for the Western Renegade Non Wing Sprint Car Series and it already is turning heads.
The series already has announced that there will be a tentative schedule to be released that will have twenty-six nights scheduled. One of the tracks that has agreed to take on the wingless sprints this year is Devils Lake, as they have agreed to run them sixteen times this summer. The other tracks include Southwest Speedway, Nodak Speedway, and McLean County. The series will host co-sanctioned races with the Northern Renegades and the UMSS groups.
There has also been a surge of drivers to sign up and purchase cars for the 2020 season. One would have to admit that the surge of fourteen drivers committing to the WRNWSS was a bit of a surprise. However, you can't be too surprised by this number as the affordability is one of the main drawing points to the class. The rules allow for a lot of lower budget teams to be competetive and yet still not be forced to break the bank. The other interesting aspec of the series is broad range of the drivers and their backgrounds. For example one driver is a former modified driver, while another raced midwest mods, then there is the one who raced sprint cars, not to mention the hornet driver, and the complete rookie. Yes, this will is an interesting group of drivers coming together to tackle the wild world of sprint car racing.
I would expect to see some exciting moments throughout the year and some exciting racing from this start up group. If you get the opportunity to check out this series you should as it will an interesting night of racing as wingless sprints haven't been in our area (western North Dakota) in a very long time!
